At the time, I thought this was really strange. (So did my family). And then I discovered that there are a lot of people who share this fascination. I realized that there is an entire industry that caters to my obsession with patterned paper and coordinating embellishments. Then I discovered that these people also form clubs where they get together, share ideas, and eat chocolate. What could be better?

Scrapbooking clubs are the quilting bees of the modern era. When you join – or form – a scrapbook group, you create a regular time to meet with creative, loving, and family-centered friends. Carving out a regular time to meet is an ideal way to create and maintain these meaningful friendships. Plus, as everyone gets together to work with family photographs and poignant memories, conversations tend to be deep and meaningful, too.

You can start your own scrapbooking club by asking yourself these questions:

- How often do you want to meet? How frequently do you want to hold group meetings (or crops)?

Weekly, twice-monthly, monthly? It’s best to get a consensus from group members as to which day works best, as well as which time of day. Will you need child care – and how many people will be pitching in for the sitter? How many people do you want in your scrapbook club? The group dynamic varies greatly if you have 12 people, versus 30 or more. Decide in advance how many people you think will comprise an ideal group. Do you want an intimate gathering of friends – or the energy of a larger collaboration?

- Where do you want to host the crop?

You can start out at your home, if you have the space. Or you can ask if the scrapbookers in your club would like to rotate houses. For larger groups, consider churches, community centers, or conference rooms. Often churches and businesses will be very receptive to providing space for this type of gathering. Scrapbooking is a fun, family-oriented activity, which places of worship and community centers generally love to embrace.

- Do you want to charge membership dues?

If you have to pay for your scrapbooking space, you’ll probably want to recoup those costs. If you are going to provide instruction (or food or a babysitter) – simply charge reasonable dues from each member to cover your costs. Many scrapbookers are accustomed to paying for this type of scrap space.

- What will you serve?

You can serve food – or not. I like to keep things really simple. I have a simple basket of cold Evian bottles – which I stock up on when there’s a sale. The best foods to serve don’t leave anything behind, so stay away from anything that would make it necessary for guests to wash their hands with each bite. If you’re going to serve finger food, use toothpicks. And – for the chocolate fix – MandMs are wonderful because they really do melt in your mouth and not in your hand.

- How structured would you like your meetings to be?

Some scrapbooking clubs will invite Instructors to teach a variety of more advanced techniques. Check with your local scrapbooking store and direct sales consultants to see which classes might be available.

- What is the best way to set up the meeting space?

Make sure the lighting is adequate and that each guest has enough table space. You can set everyone up on your dining room table, or – if you have the space, create a more elaborate configuration. One idea I found on the Two Peas in a Bucket (http://www.twopeasinabucket.com) message board is to create a square from 2 8-foot tables and 2 6-foot tables. This configuration will comfortably accommodate 8 scrapbookers. It’s fun to have some community tools on one table, too. I have the basics: trimmers, Coluzzle, Silent Eyelet Setter, a mini sewing machine, etc. I also like to bring a selection of my favorite idea books and scrapbooking magazines, especially those that feature seasonal project ideas. And place a small gift bag or paper lunch sack in the center of each table for little scraps. This goes a long way in helping to keep each workspace organized and clutter-free. You can also set a relaxing (or energizing) mood with your choice of soft background music.

- How will you find club members?

If you don’t already have a group of scrapbooking friends (or you want to find more), simply announce your group in the community. Word of mouth is the best way to do this. Ask your scrapbooking friends to bring their scrapbooking friends to the club meetings. You can also post flyers and announcements on community bulletin boards in libraries, grocery stores, community centers, etc. Check to see if your local newspaper will run a free ad in the Community Notes section before each scheduled crop. For example: “Free Scrapbooking Crop. All levels of experience welcome. Instructor/designer on hand to answer questions and provide instruction. Come have fun and meet new friends. Time and location. Your contact info.”

You can also send email invites to all your friends. Evite.com (http://www.evite.com) is a great tool for keeping track of invitees. Simply pitch your crop night as a “girls’ night out” (or “mom’s night out”) where you’ll get important things done (and it never hurts to let them know you’ll have chocolate on hand.)

How can I learn to snowboard?
About a year ago I went snowboarding for the first time (I went skiing once before and didn’t like it). I liked snowboarding more and I was a LITTLE better at it, but after a full day of persistence I couldn’t even make it down a green run without crashing like 7 times. I want to try it again but I was wondering if it would be beneficial to just get lessons? I’ve never gotten them before. And, can someone explain to me how to slow down?

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American humorist, satirist, lecturer and writer. Twain is most noted for his novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). He is also known for his quotations. His first important work, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, was published in 1865. His next publication was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which drew on his youth in Hannibal. The character of Tom Sawyer was modeled on twain as a child, with traces of two schoolmates, John Briggs and Will Bowen. His next major published work, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, solidified him as a noteworthy American writer. Some have called it the first Great American Novel. Finn was an offshoot from Tom Sawyer and proved to have a more serious tone than its predecessor. In other words- walking on a loose leash. This video quickly outines exercises to get your dog walking on a loose leash by your side. Put very basically FIRST you will teach the dog what you want them to do! And secondly, stop reinforcing them when they pull! I demonstrate the exercise using a clicker, but if you do not have one, you can always use a verbal marker like yes etc. However you will get much faster and reliable results by using the clicker. If you hold the clicker in the same hand as the leash, and keep the treats in the other hand, you will find it easier to manage. Practice holding the leash, clicker, and treats when you do not have the dog attached to the leash yet, so you dont become overwhelmed. Its very short and has lots of pictures. I would advise against using any forms of positive punishment when teaching any behavior, but especially leash walking, as startling or hurting a dog actually increases their stress hormones in their body causing the dog to be more hyperactive and more likely to become aroused and reactive towards other dogs and people (weather they want to greet them or not). The Greater Memphis Local Chapter of the National Association of Professional Women held a monthly networking meeting on December 3rd and planned to attend professional seminars and webinars on marketing, business management, and effective communication.

NAPW Greater Memphis Local Chapter President Onika Shirley greeted the member-attendees by welcoming everyone and thanking them for coming out. She then distributed instructions on how to change the Username and Password login information for members to access the NAPW Chapter website more quickly. Onika will forward these instructions to members that were unable to attend the meeting.

Onika informed the group about upcoming free local seminars available to members through the STAR 12 program. These include several informative topics coming up in January, such as Facebook Marketing for Relative Newbies, Management Skills for First-Time Supervisors, and Communicating With Tack and Skill for Managers and Supervisors. These seminars are an excellent resource available to all NAPW members on NAPW.com.

It was decided that there will be a door prize drawing at each monthly meeting for attendees. Onika graciously provided the first gift, which was drawn by Kris Seiler. The winner each month will be responsible for providing the door prize at the next monthly meeting. Door Prize value is approximately $ 5-10. We hope that additional members will enjoy this fun prize opportunity in upcoming meetings, said Onika.

The chapter discussed possible venues for upcoming monthly meetings. These include local libraries, restaurants, and members residences. Ryans Restaurant in Horn Lake has been the meeting location for the past three meetings, but the group is hopeful that another venue can be found. It was agreed in previous meetings that the first Saturday of each month at 2 pm would be a convenient day and time for members busy schedules.

The members present suggested that each monthly meeting have a specific topic for discussion. These include networking venues, charitable and/or fund-raising opportunities, and pertinent discussion topics. All members were encouraged to bring suggestions on topics they would like to share and explore.

Email reminders will be sent to Chapter members at least ten days in advance of monthly meetings, with venue and monthly topics noted by the Chapter Secretary, Gayle Anthony. Members were advised to check their NAPW inboxes.

The Greater Memphis Chapter requested each members input on establishing a Facebook profile. Several members expressed interest in exploring this social networking opportunity to showcase members and upcoming activities. Social networking can also be a way to attract non-members to make connections with people with similar interest and goals, Onika said.

April Davis suggested having flyers printed and distributed to local businesses. The flyers could be used as a resource to draw the attention of potential members. The chapter also wants to create a foundation that will offer positive images to young women from all walks of life.

The next monthly meeting is scheduled for January 7th at 2pm. The topic will be New Year New You and will include hair-styling and grooming tips for professional women. The meeting with be held at April Davis house, in Cordova and directions to Aprils house will be forwarded to members who RSVP-respond to meeting requests.

The National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) is the largest and most recognized network of female professionals. A new survey released by the Project Management Institute (PMI) involving 30,000 practitioners in 29 countries confirms that project management is one of the hottest professions in the marketplace.
